Key Elements

In summary, the primary purpose of a cover letter is to persuade an employer to invite you for an interview. It complements your resume by providing a deeper insight into your experience, qualifications, and interest in the position.

When writing your cover letter, be sure to include a clear introduction, a body paragraph that emphasizes your skills and qualifications, and a concluding statement that expresses gratitude for the employer's time and consideration.

Your cover letter should always include a header, contact information, a formal greeting, and a professional closing signature.

Steps to Writing an Appealing Cover Letter

  1. Add your contact information, this can be copied and pasted from your resume

  2. Greet the hiring manager, preferably by name, for example, " Dear Dr.Smith"

  3. Begin your introduction paragraph, talk about your enthusiasm for the position and how you discovered it

  4. Transition to your body paragraph, highlighting your experience and interests that align with the role and make you the ideal candidate

  5. Wrap up by reiterating your qualifications, and thank the manager for their time and consideration
